Whether you’re using Oracle Database to power some of the world’s most demanding systems—from global banks processing millions of transactions a minute to hospitals safeguarding patient records—you’re on one platform. So what is it and why has it been the leader of the enterprise data world for 40 years?
Oracle Database is an Oracle Corporation product that is a multi-model relational database management system (RDBMS). It provides SQL storage, organization, and retrieval of structured data, and it is designed to scale, be secure, and reliable, as expected in mission-critical enterprise applications. It was first commercially released in 1979 and still the market leader for large volumes, critical workloads.
Oracle’s database has been around for some of the first commercial SQL database systems, and has been characterized by significant releases such as in-memory processing, AI-native features, cloud-native, and clustering.
It has most recently launched its Oracle AI Database 26ai (also with the “23” code base but the introduction of the “AI” branding) – which integrates AI directly into the database, such as with Oracle AI Vector Search. The previous long-term supported release is the widely deployed Oracle Database 19c.
The Oracle Enterprise Edition distinguishes between two concepts that are very similar.
Applications communicate with Oracle in SQL to manipulate the data, and in PL/SQL, Oracle’s procedural language, to call stored procedures, functions, and to execute business logic within Oracle.
Oracle’s reputation for enterprise is built on a comprehensive set of features:
There are multiple editions of Oracle to provide to accommodate different requirements and budgets:
In industries that cannot afford downtime or data loss, Oracle provides the power for core systems, such as finance (core banking, trading, risk), healthcare (patient records, clinical systems), retail and e-commerce (order and inventory systems), manufacturing (ERP and supply chain), and telecommunications (billing and network management).
Platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL are Oracle’s competitors. Its differentiators are the number of high-availability and scalability features (like RAC and Data Guard), the amount of security tooling and its track record with the largest mission-critical workloads.
The trade-off is cost and complexity, and that’s where many organisations turn to specialist partners to efficiently run Oracle.
Yes. At its core, Oracle is a relational database management system (RDBMS), but it’s also multi-model, supporting JSON, spatial, graph and vector data along with relational tables.
Oracle queries and manipulates data via SQL and extends SQL with a procedural syntax, PL/SQL, for stored procedures, triggers and in-database business logic.
The new flagship is Oracle AI Database 26ai which succeeded 23ai with the same “23” code base. Oracle Database 19c is a long-term usage version of Oracle.
